About ABV, IBU
ABV is an abbreviation for Alcohol by volume and represents the alcohol content.
IBU is an abbreviation for International bitterness units, and is a numerical value that indicates the degree of bitterness. Excerpt from Wikipedia :
“The bitterness of beer is provided by the hops used in the brewing process. IBU is defined as the proportion (ppm) of isohumulones, the most bitter and most abundant bitter component in beer.
Bitterness effects are less pronounced in high malt beers, so heavier beers require higher IBU values to balance the flavor. For example, Imperial Stout has an IBU of 50, but is less bitter than English Bitter, which has an IBU of 30. This is because the former uses more malt than the latter. The technical limit of IBU is approximately 100.
Light American lagers have an IBU of approximately 5 or less. Barley wines can exceed 100. ”
